I am surprised at H Plus reluctance to release interesting finishes.....I guess this is a
gap in the market that Velocity will fill with the B43 being released soon.

In the mean time, I took it upon myself to re finish some H Plus rims.....

Straight fork and straight stem!!

This is a very unusual combination, that was put together at Ocean Cycle Factory/NJS Supermarket last week...
Takamatsu Kenji fork, long, straight with no rake. Nagasawa lugs, hand made by an NJS frame
builder. It is very very twitchy and odd to ride, but allows super tight turns and barspinning a 700c front wheel.
When combined with the rare Nitto Zero Stem, the bar can spin very freely, with no centrifugal 'wobble'....it is very strange to ride, but is working quite well for this customer!

This is one of the hardest to find frames, as far as NJS Keirin approved goes. Others that are very
rare even in Japan, are Venus, Civras, King Speed, Ohtaki, Shimazaki and Yanagisawa.
Everest are best known for their Randonneurs, which are very sought after in Japan, but the Everest piste frames also fetch big money. This is my friend Miya Sans... Kalavinka's Tanabe San did his training at Everest before establishing Kalavinka in Tokyo.

Sugino Prototype Cog

I think Sugino was not very keen to have the photos of this cog on the net yet, so to keep everyone
happy I have taken them down. Sorry! Hopefully they will be released soon....
Not sure if these are out yet, Sugino rep told me it was a prototype coming out later this year.
You get 3 cogs, 16/17/18 with the set, and there is no need for a chain whip, just a shimano road bb tool, which does the lockring too.
To change cogs, you just take the lockring off, and the tooth section of the cog comes off laterally.
I threw this one on my 3Rensho, along with.....

Very old Nagasawa frame with unusually ugly 'N' marks on the fork shoulders, unlike the typeface I recently posted on njssupermarket.net
This is a average 110 ended 510mm frame, and is going to fetch a fortune for the seller in Japan.
Very unique.

My NAKAGAWA street bike...

Very under-rated and little known builder in Osaka; Nakagawa. Made a lot of 24 inch/700c frames for amateur track and road TT riders, and mainly road frames. Very unique lugwork, bent chain and seat stays, straight fork, sexy/weird fork crown....nearly always pink with white headtube and seat tube. This is a purple one made in custom team colors. Rare parts fitted include the deadstock AERO4 Araya front 650c rim, Ariake Jaguar Aero II padded white saddle....and, well that is about all actually. Rear Araya candy rim w/matching Gran Compe SS tyre........Fun bike!

This is my friend Kato's Kalavinka. He paid a nail sculpture artist to
encrust the lugs and logos with plastic diamonds. Crazy. I love it personally,
although it is not one for the matte black w/stickers crowd.

1.I recently came across a mother-load of Hoshi and Asahi heavily bladed spokes in Japan.
Pity Dura Ace no longer make SL track hubs. It is hard work recessing the Dura Ace high flange spoke holes to allow these spokes in.
2.Pink 3Rensho I was building up for myself, with white hed3 and white araya disk, but it sold before I got a chance to put a few chips in it.

1. Some of the old plans from previously built VIVALO race frames. Pre Nov.07, about 600 riders in pro Keirin were using these frames. They order about 4 per year.
2.Sexy Kashimax NJS doubles. At the same time in early to mid 07 when these straps lost their coupling patch (no longer included), they received a nice big dirty NJS stamp in the middle, something that the Toshi doubles are still missing, and I have no idea why.
3.Kusaka San fondling one of the last forks to be built in the VIVALO factory, an OCEAN keirin sentouki fork. I think he is peeling off the tape that covers the fork ends, during the painting process.
4.A steezy BMX relic from 2 Osaka companies, Kashimax (this is actually an NJS saddle) X Diamond Back.
5.A nice rare 26.8 diamater Campa NJS post in box, NOS. This is now hanging out the top of a Blue Ocean frame that gets around Osaka and Kobe. 26.8 posts are mostly commonly needed for Panasonic NJS frames.

1. This is one of ka-shi-ra's MiyaKun's bikes's's. He has to have the best collection of parts
and bikes of anyone I know in Kansai. I must do a whole post on him some time soon.
This is a restored black Kalavinka w/Cinelli badge stem, Cinelli drops, Shamal front, Campa
disk rear, Sugino zen, custom nuevo pedals, MKS double straps......
2.Some of the sexier color samples at the VIVALO factory. Pika Pika!
3.Not sure what to make of this wall. I am sure it means something to someone.
4.An old Hatta box. I love dusty old crap like this.
5.Kusaka on the 1s and 2s. He keeps all the plans for every frame he ever built. 30 years worth.

3.Taito, of Chickenot in Kyoto, very fast and spotty. Note the odd brake lever placement.
Many events in Japan (this was a road race in Osaka) require at least one brake be fitted, so
some riders tack the lever on the top tube to get it out of view while they are racing.
4.Blue Vittoria Mondiale tubular, on my old grey bridgestone.
5.Unfortunately Nitto Tokyo discontinued the Crystal Fellow stems in early-mid 07.

bullhorn bar (new for '08), messed up carbon disk, and 2 kashimax top
tube protectors, one is for the brake! Also fitted is a carbon corima pillar,
and araya gold njs front rim.

CA4LA's Miya no LEVEL 24/24'' funny bike converted to fixed.
Finding 2 24 inch rims is not fun! But it paid off.....a very rare
and wacky bike, even by Japan standard....

The weirdest bike in my own collection, a 1 (or maybe 3) off
prototype fixed frame, inspired by the satan star, hand made
in Tokyo. I won it at a recent track bike event in Osaka, beating
the 'Famicom Boss' in the final of a foot down contest. Osu!

Kenchan of Metallico is working on a custom B123 Nitto NJS drop
bar that has rounded steel ends, with no seam, much like his straight
polished Metallico Tsuchinoko bar, which is more often referred to as
the Dildo bar....
This one is a 350mm prototype.

A beautiful 700/650 frame built by Hashiguchi San, for
Murakami San of the Joto Ringyou track team in Osaka.
The tear drop shaped seat tube does not take your average
round seat pillar. A custom made tear drop shaped pillar
was custom made for this frame. Yabai!

A few shots from Nara Keirin a few weeks ago. The best thing apart from watching the racing, is the artwork on the posters...some people steal them and sell them online, which I guess is a pretty solid idea. The samurai senshu is going to win by any means.

bikes for a second, you might think you were at the greyhounds...

What I noticed, regarding parts/frames this weekend......
Maeda, Peloton frames a-plenty, a few Makinos, Panasonics, Bridgeys, 1 Samson, 1 Nagasawa,
Peloton was the most common frame I saw this day.
Everyone was using single straps. One guy had a Ariake Jaguar saddle! Surprised he had not
worn it out yet....very old model.

Minami Osaka's B-Dash messenger company (named after Super Mario Bros, when you hold
the b button down and boogie) are throwing a trike drag race night tonight somewhere in Osaka, cant remember the name of the place. This is the Ocean Cycle Factory entry, with Nitto B123AA drops, Nitto black stem, Dia Compe 1'' threaded headset, Dura Ace pedals, Cinelli straps, and now (not pictured) a wheelie bar, in case things get out of hand.

Super Aero oddities...

This is a purple edition of the beloved Super Aero rim by Araya, 30mm sidewall, no braking
machined surface, and it is a clincher! 650c 28 hole....
Behind it is a very rare 24h, 24 inch funny bike Super Aero tubular, NOS.
And the meat in their 80's sandwich is a hed3 custom painted at VIVALO in white
with pink and green metal flake (clincher).
And below are some toe clips, which are probably the hardest to find NJS clips made. Minoura
now make dinky wheelbuilding stands, and bike racks.

Ok so this blog will mostly be slightly nerdy and have the word 'rare' in each post.
I will try to back this up with stuff that is actually kind of interesting and/or hard
to find. Here are some more strange bikes from Yoshi's studio....a BMX and a MTB.

CHI'CHA!

This must the chibiest 3rensho ever made....so ugly but I cannot stop looking at
it.......I have noticed a trend in Japan, where street riders have started to dig
for 55-58cm frames, since these frames arguably have the nicest triangle proportions.
I used to enjoy the fact that the frames I wanted were the least popular in Japan.
Time to start a trend overseas.....let's ride 44cm frames (the size of this road frame below).
